Greece, 01/09/2024 — The Municipal Radio,

which paved the way for free radio and television in Greece, is once again at the forefront of innovation after 37 years. Led by the Municipal Information, Entertainment, and Communications Company of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, it has introduced DAB+ digital broadcasting technology to Greek radio.

On Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024, the pilot test broadcast in the new DAB+ digital broadcasting standard began, aimed at optimizing the quality of the radio program, reducing the energy footprint by using green broadcasting systems, and positioning DEPTHE (The Municipal Corporation of Information, Broadcasting and Communication of Thessaloniki) as a provider of digital radio broadcast services for all municipal radio stations in Greece. Telmaco S.A. was awarded the project following a competitive tender process. Telmaco, a leading company in the field of Telecommunications Systems, provides the DAB+ technology, “Digital Audio Broadcasting,” via its renowned manufacturers Factum Radioscape and Syes. Factum Radioscape’s MultiMuxa encoding and multiplexing system and MultiMonitor software, combined with Syes' transmission transmitters, offers the most reliable and ideal solution for Greece. DAB is a digital radio transmission technology, superior to analog radio (FM) in many aspects, including sound quality and the ability to transmit more radio stations on the same frequency.

James Waterson, Sales Manager of Factum Radioscape, said:

“We’re pleased to help launch another DAB+ multiplex for Greece with our partner Telmaco. This launch is a significant step towards an enriched broadcasting landscape in Greece. MultiMuxa exemplifies our commitment to delivering the best in DAB radio technology.”

Since its founding in 1975, Telmaco has represented manufacturers of broadcast and reception systems for television, radio, and telecommunications in general, including MPEG modulators/demodulators, installation equipment, digital television transmission systems (DVB-T, flyaway DSNG Systems, Fixed Earth Stations, Monitoring Systems, and more).

The digital radio broadcast is independently transmitted from DEPTHE's facilities on channel 5C/178.352 MHz DEPTHE TELECOM, with the collaboration and under the auspices of the Association of Municipal Radio and Television Media of Greece.

Those who own DAB+ radios in their cars or homes in the Thessaloniki area and a large part of Central Macedonia were able to listen to FM100 & FM100.6 radio stations. Additionally, during the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), and until September the 15th, they had the opportunity to listen to the program of a total of 13 Municipal Radio stations.
